Surgical staples are used to close surgical incisions and wounds with relatively straight edges. How long the staples are left in place depends on the wound and the patient's healing rate. Staples are usually removed at a general practitioner's office or in a hospital. Each staple is removed individually using the skin staple remover.

Use
Removal of surgical skin staples. This is a specialized tool for doctors.

• Clean the wound. Depending on how well the incision has healed, you should use a physiological saline solution, an antiseptic such as alcohol, or sterilized cotton swabs to remove dirt or dried fluids from around and in the wound.
• Slide the lower part of the staple remover under the center of the staple. Start at one end of the healed incision.
• Squeeze the handles of the skin staple remover all the way together. The upper part of the skin staple remover will press down on the center of the staple, causing the ends of the staple to come out of the incision.
• Remove the staple by releasing the handles. Drop removed staples into a disposable tray or bag.
• Pull the surgical staple out in the same direction it went in, to avoid damaging the skin.
• You may feel a slight pinch or sting, or a slight sensation of tugging on your skin. This is normal.
• Use the staple remover to remove all other staples.
  
  

Once you have reached the end of the incision, you should re-inspect the area around the wound for any staples you might have missed. This will help prevent future skin irritation and wound infection. Re-clean the wound with an antiseptic and cover with a bandage if necessary.

After removing the staples, the doctor may decide to apply a bandage.

Storage - Cleaning

Clean before and after each use. Dry thoroughly before storing. This will extend the life of the needle holder.

Store in a cool, dark, and dry place.
